The Power of Fenugreek: How to Naturally Boost Your Milk Supply

written by Kim Roman

As a mother who exclusively breastfed for 19 months, I know how tough it can be. For some, breastfeeding comes naturally – no issues with latching or milk supply, it’s just smooth sailing. For many, including myself, that is not the case. Luckily, there are remedies you can try to naturally increase your milk supply before throwing in the towel.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) is a galactagogue (a substance that promotes lactation) that has been used for centuries by nursing mothers to increase milk supply. Generally, with regular use mothers will notice an increase in milk production anywhere from 1-3 days after starting to take fenugreek but in some it may take a week or two to notice any difference.

There are two main ways to consume fenugreek for the purpose of increasing milk supply – in capsule form or as a tea. The recommended dose for capsules is 2-3 610mg capsules one to three times a day (so for those really struggling you are looking at up to nine pills a day!). When blended right, the tea offers the same strength in a 1-3 cup per day dosage.

So how exactly does fenugreek work? Well, it works because it stimulates sweat glands, and the milk ducts actually operate in a similar fashion as sweat glands, allowing the fenugreek to stimulate milk production. Blended into a caffeine-free tea like mamatea’s Nursing Mama tea – fenugreek tea can be a tasty and relaxing way to naturally boost your milk supply and make it easier to reach your personal breastfeeding goals.
