Join In On Our Weekly Art Journalling Group

Hey all

Image: The ragged edge
I started art journalling a while back as a way of dealing with the depression I have been going through, and have found it a truly inspiring thing to do. It soothes, calms, reflects, goes deep...
I wanted to share the experience with you and also commit myself to keep it up, and have come up with the idea of doing a weekly Art Group/Art class.

Here's how:
Every Friday, I will do a post with either a topic or a technique, giving you some examples you might use in your artwork. You are then sent off to create and send me a picture of your work, with a couple of words about it by Wednesday the next week. The following week, I will showcase some of the work of the previous week and introduce a new topic/technique.

If you're a blogger and you want to join in, I can make a linky so you can publish your work to your own blog.

What do you need:

  1. To start journalling, you'll need a journal. This can be any paper really, some may choose to use a small notebook, so you can keep it with you, others will prefer larger canvases (scrapbooks are great for this) without lines, another idea is an old hardcover book.
  2. Then you will need a range of art supplies, maybe rummage through your cupboards before you go spending lots of money. The basics: a black pen or marker, pencil, any type of paint, watercolor, colored pencils, a paint brush. Some other items to consider: crayon, stamps, glue, glitter...
  3. Paper: we'll probably be doing some decal and collage at one point, so it can be a good idea to start hoarding. Again, this can be as simple as old magazines or newspaper, ends of craft paper, colored paper, paper napkins, crepe paper, anything really
  4. Optional: yarn, stitching needles, ribbon, buttons, beads, chalk, oil pastels, doilies, lace, markers...

I'm not creative/I can't draw/I'm scared
It's ok to be a bit uncomfortable with art journalling. Heck, being uncomfortable is probably a forte, as it will force you out of your comfort zone and have you do something new!
Most of us have been raised with the ideas that art is for professionals and kids, nit self-respecting adults. Obviously this is all wrong. Anyone can create art. And this isn't about creating something pretty, there's no 'doing it wrong' this is about exploring yourself through art, exploring techniques, creating, healing. SO just throw all of your arguments overboard and Do It!

I love this! Where do I sign up?
So you want to commit to our weekly gathering? Great! Just add your commitment in the comments below and keep your eyes peeled on Fridays when I will be posting the topics!
If you want to publish your results to your personal blog, please mention this in the comment, so I can set up a linky.
