Where We Came From

Every once in a while, I suddenly realize how much we have shifted from the mainstream. How much we have really changed from the people we used to be.
I am always looking ahead to all the things I still want to change, to the person and parent I would like to be. And there is quite some road to travel until I am there. At best, I live in the moment and enjoy where I am; but I rarely look behind, to where I came from.

But when I get confronted with people from my past, old friends I haven’t seen in a while, I suddenly realize that there have been a lot of changes in our lives.
One of the first questions we generally get is what we’re going to do about schooling... So then you get drifted off in the whole unschooling discussion.
Or when conversation hits the food topic, we realize we eat quite differently from most people now, since we have gone paleo.
And sometimes it gets really freaky when we hit other parenting topics, like discipline.

And then I think that if me four years ago would have met me now, I’d probably raise an eyebrow too.
So it’s really important to give people who are new to the philosophy time to swallow, think, re-chew. It can be a lot to take in for anyone. That doesn’t mean either of you is an idiot. You’re just not in the right place.
